Rosso Di Ca’ Momi

Great Red Blend for Wedding Receptions

While searching for the perfect wines to serve at our son’s upcoming summer wedding, I was introduced by a very knowledgeable wine expert to Rosso Di Ca’ Momi. Prior to my visit to the store, my husband and I had narrowed our choice for a red to two of our lower priced favorites:  Sebastiani Cabernet and The Rule red blend.  And then I met Jonathan who gave me some spot on advice:  when choosing a red for a wedding reception (or any large party where you are serving only one red) stay down the middle of the taste palate.  In other words, if going with a Cabernet, choose one that is not too fruit forward nor too big and dry.  He added not to go with anything except a Cabernet or Red Blend.  The other red varietals are too polarizing.

I very confidently began naming my favorite Cabernets.  “Ah,” he said, “you like the big, complex Cabs.”

Ok, yes I do, but it was a good reminder that not everyone does.  So I quickly mentioned my two lower priced choices.  Jonathan quickly told me that they did not carry The Rule red blend.  “But Sebastiani would be an okay choice for a Cabernet,” he added.  “However, I do have a suggestion for another red blend you would enjoy that is perfect for this occasion.  In fact, I recommend this to all of my mothers of the bride or groom when they come in.  It’s an awesome wine and has an excellent price point.”

We walked over to the display of Rosso Di Ca’ Momi.  Hmmm, I thought to myself.  I wonder if he is just pushing this because it was one of their promotional wines for the month.  I checked the non-cash price per bottle:  under $10.00.  What the heck, it was worth a try.  I added it to my cart and served it with the lasagna dinner I prepared for my husband on Father’s Day.

Keeping in mind that this is not the type of red that is our favorite, my husband and I were very pleasantly surprised.  This wine has structure, is not too fruity, and definitely offers berry flavors along with a hint of smoke.  “Done deal,” my husband pronounced.  “This is a very likable

wine and will be perfect for the occasion.”

Ca’ Momi wines are grown in two estate vineyards in the Los Carneros sub appellation of Napa Valley.  The winery was founded by three Italians: Stefano, Dario and Valentina.  So it is not surprising that this is a crowd-pleaser.  And one more note:  Rosso Di Ca’ Momi was the Silver Medal Winner of the 2016 San Francisco International Wine Competition!
