Oakville Ranch 2013 Robert’s Cab Franc

Oakville Ranch

Robert’s 2013 Cabernet Franc

I choose to drink Cab Francs like I choose my closest friends:  very carefully and only after I’ve gotten to know them well.  And so it went with Oakville Ranch’s outstanding Cab Franc named in memory of its founder Robert Miner.

At the end of our fabulous tour of Oakville Ranch Winery and Vineyards last summer (see review posted September 14, 2016), Shelia let us sample some of their wines.  When I saw the bottle of Cab Franc waiting to be poured, “I thought to myself “ick”.  There’s one I won’t like”.  And my thoughts of joining their wine club went down a notch.  Most Cab Francs are too sharp- tasting for my palate. Maybe it’s the hint of green pepper so commonly found in them.   I’ve really only found a few I’d be willing to drink again.  Well now I can add Robert’s 2013 to that list.

2013 Robert’s Cab Franc

I really enjoyed tasting this wine at the winery, although my favorite that day was their Field Blend.  My husband thought it was okay, maybe not worthy of its $110 per bottle tariff. And then two bottles came in our wine club shipment last November. Now let me say that often once we get our wine club shipments and open a bottle, they aren’t quite as good as we remembered them.  Had we had too much wine that day in Napa before the tasting and thus our decision making capabilities were impaired? Hmm.  Maybe.  Or maybe the wine didn’t travel from Napa to Texas well?  Hmm. Maybe. And knowing that we usually prefer to let our reds age for 5+ years before drinking them, we were reluctant to open anything too early.  So with that in mind, we decided anyway to uncork my husband’s least favorite of the Oakville Ranch reds.

Boy, are we glad we made that sober decision!  Robert’s 2013 Cab Franc was even better than we remembered it!  We did decant it.  And while it was decanting, we enjoyed the nose.  We smiled at each other after the first sip and then after the second swallow said in unison, “wow”!  The wine is rich with flavors of dark fruit, licorice and spice.  It has a full mouth feel and a long, complex finish.  It hit right in our palate’s “wheel- house”.

The production of the 2013 Robert’s Cabernet Franc is small.  So you may want to order it sooner rather than later!

Rosso Di Ca’ Momi

Great Red Blend for Wedding Receptions

While searching for the perfect wines to serve at our son’s upcoming summer wedding, I was introduced by a very knowledgeable wine expert to Rosso Di Ca’ Momi. Prior to my visit to the store, my husband and I had narrowed our choice for a red to two of our lower priced favorites:  Sebastiani Cabernet and The Rule red blend.  And then I met Jonathan who gave me some spot on advice:  when choosing a red for a wedding reception (or any large party where you are serving only one red) stay down the middle of the taste palate.  In other words, if going with a Cabernet, choose one that is not too fruit forward nor too big and dry.  He added not to go with anything except a Cabernet or Red Blend.  The other red varietals are too polarizing.

I very confidently began naming my favorite Cabernets.  “Ah,” he said, “you like the big, complex Cabs.”

Ok, yes I do, but it was a good reminder that not everyone does.  So I quickly mentioned my two lower priced choices.  Jonathan quickly told me that they did not carry The Rule red blend.  “But Sebastiani would be an okay choice for a Cabernet,” he added.  “However, I do have a suggestion for another red blend you would enjoy that is perfect for this occasion.  In fact, I recommend this to all of my mothers of the bride or groom when they come in.  It’s an awesome wine and has an excellent price point.”

We walked over to the display of Rosso Di Ca’ Momi.  Hmmm, I thought to myself.  I wonder if he is just pushing this because it was one of their promotional wines for the month.  I checked the non-cash price per bottle:  under $10.00.  What the heck, it was worth a try.  I added it to my cart and served it with the lasagna dinner I prepared for my husband on Father’s Day.

Keeping in mind that this is not the type of red that is our favorite, my husband and I were very pleasantly surprised.  This wine has structure, is not too fruity, and definitely offers berry flavors along with a hint of smoke.  “Done deal,” my husband pronounced.  “This is a very likable

wine and will be perfect for the occasion.”

Ca’ Momi wines are grown in two estate vineyards in the Los Carneros sub appellation of Napa Valley.  The winery was founded by three Italians: Stefano, Dario and Valentina.  So it is not surprising that this is a crowd-pleaser.  And one more note:  Rosso Di Ca’ Momi was the Silver Medal Winner of the 2016 San Francisco International Wine Competition!

Gruet Brut

Gruet Brut

I will say this upfront and remind you again that this is the best sparkling wine/Methode Champenoise for the money! (And sometimes I cringe when I say “for the money” because truly this wine is at the top of my list of favorites at any price!)  Gruet Brut easily tastes as good as its French counterparts at a third of their cost.

Gruet-Brut-75cl-BottleMy husband and I came across this gem years ago while dining at our favorite seafood restaurant in Dallas, Café Pacific.  Gruet is offered there by the glass and by the bottle. And back in the day when we are on a tighter budget, we chose this sparkler based on price. Now we return to it each and every time we dine here!  We found no need to try another.

The Gruet winery, founded in 1984, is located in Albuquerque, New Mexico and has roots from Gilbert Gruet’s Champagne house in France.  While it may seem surprising to find a winery in New Mexico, a quick study of the soil and climate reveals why the winery has been successful:  the combination of sandy soil, high elevations and dramatic daily temperature swings.  The Gruets have eight other sparkling wines including Blanc de Blanc, Blanc de Noir and a Rose and they offer several still wines as well.  (Look for an upcoming comparison review of the sparklers!)

Gruet’s Brut NV is a blend of 75% Chardonnay and 25% Pinot Noir grapes.  It is crisp with hints of green apple, citrus and yeast and provides a long finish.  Wine Spectator rates it 89.  (I’d give it a few more points than that!)  And now for the price point: $11-$13 at most wine stores, which is why we will be pouring this sparkler at our son’s upcoming rehearsal dinner!!

Apothic Red

Apothic
Apothic Red

Many of my friends ask me for a good-tasting, crowd-pleasing red wine at an affordable price point.

My answer is that you can’t go wrong with Apothic Red.

Apothic Red is a blend of Zinfandel, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet.  The prominent flavor is black cherry softened by mocha and a hint of vanilla.  I have to be honest; the mocha is what lures me to this wine along with its smooth finish.  This is a California wine that also offers two other labels:  Apothic White and Apothic Dark as well as seasonal offerings like Apothic Crush.  But Apothic Red outshines its red siblings.

In addition, Apothic has a very entertaining website…you can even have your palm read (as I did and I have to admit what they said was very accurate)!

And now for the best part, Apothic Red runs just under $8.00 a bottle at most wine stores.
